At Whittington Primary School, we provide a dynamic and exciting Physical Education program covering all aspects of the curriculum. Physical Education focuses on students enhancing their own and others’ health, safety, wellbeing and physical activity participation in varied and changing contexts.
Integral to Physical Education is the acquisition of movement skills, concepts and strategies to enable students to confidently, competently and creatively participate in a range of physical activities. As a foundation for lifelong physical activity participation and enhanced performance, students develop proficiency in movement skills, physical activities and movement concepts and acquire an understanding of the science behind how the body moves. In doing so, they develop an appreciation of the significance of physical activity, outdoor recreation and sport both in Australian society and globally.
We focus on fundamental motor skills in the junior years, moving towards sport based games where they apply those skills in the senior years. Each class receives an hour per week of Physical Education with our year 5 and 6 students involved in an extra hour of 5/6 sport each week.
Wherever possible, local sporting clubs are engaged to provide the best possible coaching available in sports such as football, hockey, netball, basketball, cricket and soccer. All children are encouraged to participate at the level they are working at.
All of our year 4-6 students have the opportunity to represent our school at District Athletics and Cross Country events. Our year 5 and 6 students participate in district sport in soccer, football, netball, t-ball, cricket and basketball.
Our close proximity to Splashdown Leisure Centre allows us to utilise this venue to provide all students with swimming lessons taught by qualified swimming teachers.
